Warning Signs of Suicide
If you are having thoughts about suicide there could also be some behavioural and/or physical changes that could tell you something isn’t right. Here is a list below of some of the ways you might be feeling and some of these feelings may be subtle.
You may notice a number of signs rather than just one or two. Remember that everyone is different and respond differently to these thoughts and feelings.
This is not an exhaustive list. Be guided by your instincts
Nonverbal indicators may include
- Thinking about suicide
- Thinking about ways to kill yourself
- Feeling like you want to isolate yourself, reduce social contact with friends or family
- Feeling low and hopeless or you may notice extreme mood swings
- Feeling agitated or distracted and unable to concentrate
- Behaving recklessly
- Feeling angry
- Increasing the use of alcohol/drugs
- Sleeping too much/too little or struggling to sleep (insomnia)
- Not managing to see the future
- Giving away sentimental or expensive possessions
You might be saying to others
- You feel like a burden to them
- Saying to others that you feel worthless or alone with no one to talk to
- Talking about your death or wanting to die
Reasons for suicidal feelings
The reasons that people take their own lives are often very complex. Factors influencing whether someone is likely to be suicidal may include:
- Previous suicide attempts
- History of domestic abuse
- History of substance abuse either alcohol or drugs
- History of mental health conditions – depression, anxiety, bipolar, PTSD
- Physical illness or disability.
- Relationship problems – conflict with parents and/or romantic partners
- Legal or disciplinary problems
- Access to harmful means, such as weapons, knives or other sharp objects, medication, access to chemicals either within the household or elsewhere, ropes or belts.
Other warning signs
- Recent death or suicide of a family member or a close friend
- Ongoing exposure to bullying behaviour
- Reports of high profile ‘’celebrity’’ suicide deaths may trigger suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Financial issues that you feel cannot be solved
